We offer an integrated approach to the common problems of development and support, with particular emphasis on improving the management of software projects and application portfolios. Our services are intended to implement long-lasting changes in your software process, maximising the leverage of your investment to deliver persistent added-value. For this reason we focus on management, measurement and training issues. These include:

Software Measurement

FPA Study

Quantifies the functional size, from the business viewpoint, of an application, project or entire software portfolio. Used as part of a performance enhancement programme or to provide information for contract pricing negotiations.

Counting Practice Health Check

Determines the consistency and conformance to standards of an organisation's use of FPA. Used to resolve local counting issues and to ensure a strong foundation for benchmarking.

Scoping Study

Investigation to ascertain the viability of a proposed metrics programme or benchmarking exercise. Designed to limit initial cost, establish priorities and maximise return on subsequent investment. For more information see the description of our Scope Study service.

Metrics Programme Design and Implementation

Consultancy based project to agree, design and implement a metrics strategy. Ideal for organisations just starting to get their processes under control and to re-start stalled programmes.

For more information see the article on the Measurement Programme in a Box, in Issue 4 of our news letter, and the description of our Organisational Reporting, Collection & Analysis service

Metrics Training

Link to TrainingPractical Use of FPA is a two day workshop designed to teach participants the technique of Function Point Analysis. There are separate versions of the course for the Mark II and IFPUG methods. Ideal for projects and organisations which need functional size measures for better estimation, to track progress and to demonstrate performance over time.

Practical use of the COSMIC FFP method of sizing and estimating software requirements is a one day public course, or a two day in-house workshop, designed to teach the technique to participants.

Estimating Courses for both general estimating and early estimation of software size.

Using The Goal/Question/Metric Method for identifying and developing a suite of measures appropriate for an organisation's needs.

Performance Enhancement Programme (PEP) Benchmarking Service

The PEP Benchmarking Service provides a comprehensive performance assessment of a Member’s software application development and maintenance activities. It compares performance against the relevant information from a database covering thousands of projects from PEP Members in a wide range of organisations internationally. It enables an organisation to target improvement programmes where they will return the greatest business benefit.

Project Management

Estimating Methods and Techniques

Training and Consultancy in a variety of methods and techniques for estimating and cost modelling. Helping project managers and those responsible for departmental budgets to achieve better control.

Implementing Technical Reviews

Training and Consultancy in the process and use of Technical Reviews, recognised to be an activity that delivers significant and fast returns in improved product quality. Teaches a variety of techniques and indicates which is appropriate for particular circumstances.

Requirements and Risk Management

Training and Consultancy to assist projects to manage software requirements and the associated project risks. Used to encourage an approach that leads to traceability, correctness, completeness, consistency and testability of requirements, and that highlights threats so they may be mitigated.

Link to TrainingA Manager's Guide to Software Measurement

A one day seminar to introduce senior and line managers to the uses and benefits of software metrics. Includes a Question & Answer Session that has proven to be a quick way to focus management attention and suggest an initial Action Plan.

Software Process Improvement

Process Usage Report

Analysis of an organisation's current practices with respect to the Key Practices of the Capability Maturity Model. Used as a quick approach to create an improvement action plan and to assist a newly established Software Engineering Process Group.

SPI Programme Design and Implementation

Design, build and implementation of processes to conform with the Key Practices identified by the Capability Maturity Model. Provides external insights and experience to help projects and process owners improve and prepare for a CMMIsm Based Assessment for Internal Process Improvement.

SPI Assessments

Using SEI trained Lead Assessors, the CMMIsm Based Assessment for Internal Process Improvement is an assessment process prescribed by the Software Engineering Institute. It involves training for local assessment team members, conduct of the assessment process, feedback reports and agreement of an Improvement Action Plan. It is used to establish periodic baselines.

Software Process Improvement Training

Link to TrainingA four day intensive workshop - Introduction to the CMM® Integrated - SE/SW/IPPD (staged). The course teaches participants how to use and interpret the SEI's Capability Maturity Model. It is suitable as a refresher for experienced practitioners and as an introduction to newcomers. The course gives an understanding of the ethos, purpose and benefits of process improvement for senior managers, process owners and technical staff.
